Musselman’s Lake Halloween Dance Was “A Night To Remember”

The night of October 31st, famous as the night when spirits of the dead walk again among us, found a fabulous collection of ghouls, ghosts, witches and warlocks, satan, and angels as well as the complete cast of The Flintstones celebrating the night away here on Musselman’s Lake.

Phil Bannon and Wayne EmmersonThis yearly bash, created originally by Cedarvale Community Association and now in league with the MLRA, lured over 200 folks, including residents and friends from other places, all dressed in tantalizing costumes, into the wonderfully festooned Cedar Beach Pavilion.

Any dark spirits fled as the upbeat tunes and devilish humour of Mike Feld, Most Excellent Productions drew everyone out onto the floor, dancing swing, jitterbug, or ’60’s freestyle. The occasional slow dance offered enough time to cool down before the next jumpin’ jive.

Pumpkins carved with creepy faces, freakish smiles, and jagged teeth, bats, wings, and other spooky things lined walls and decorated each table. Come midnight delectable finger foods spread provided a repast such as Snow White might have prepared for the Dwarves. Snow White herself, accompanied by the little known Eighth Dwarf, along with the Queen of Hearts, the Mad Hatter, Pebbles, Beetlejuice and a wild assortment of characters, freaks and foes lined the walls, plates in hand for the potluck salads, meatballs, breads and of course Hallowe’en cake.

Then the prizes! Right on time a Leaf Blower for those floating yard leaves, provided by Markham Mower.

Phil Bannon and Wayne EmmersonSpeaking of floating, Do It Industries contributed a Floatable Chair, perfect for that lazy summer day. The Meat Merchant in Stouffville put up $100 worth of great gift certificates, Wine, Wine, Wine of Stouffville gave a $50 gift certificate and Cedar Beach Variety Store presented a great gift of candy. All lucky winners and the rest of us offer a huge bouquet of gratitude to these companies.

Of course, the folks behind the scenes, wigs and make-up, who gave their time and energy to create this event also deserve a big round of group applause: Cedar Beach Dance Hall for the beautiful venue, Mike Feld for Most Excellent Productions music and entertainment, Gibson Printing for the Dance Tickets, and last but most fully Lisa White. Each year Lisa White gathers our two community groups, provides the leadership, support, kindness, direction and knowledge that make the present celebration even better than the last.

If you missed this year’s revelries, get ready now for the next. Just keep watching this website. MLRA will post all the information you need to get ready for the next gala ghoul fest.

Victory Party For Councillor Phil Bannon

by

Congratulations to Phil Bannon and to all who worked on his campaign.

By Charlene Jones

Whether you sat in the comfort of your own home or joined the throng at the Victory Party for Phil Bannon, Monday nightʼs election, results proved jubilant.

From the first meeting where 66 people volunteered to help, to the last moments in Monday nightʼs count, Bannonʼs campaign demonstrated that together as a community we can get the job done.

But it was Bannonʼs history with us that determined the outcome. We know he will listen deeply to what we the community desire. We may not always agree with each other, but we can know Phil is listening and responding positively. We know he will work, and work hard to accomplish the goals we collectively request.

We know he will represent us to Council as fair, intelligent and thoughtful people, the kind of people Whitchurch Stouffville can be proud to know as neighbors, friends and constituents.

Congratulations to Phil Bannon and to all who worked on his campaign.

It’s Official: Smear Campaigns Do Not Work In Whitchurch-Stouffville

by

Voters appear to have preferred to vote on issues rather than a smear campaign

By Rick Wigmore

It would appear by the election results the voters of Whitchurch-Stouffville saw through the little brown envelopes smear campaign directed at Mayor Wayne Emmerson. Voters appear to have preferred to vote on issues rather than a smear campaign, where the author was not willing to attach his or her name to it.

Mayor Wayne Emmerson won in all 6 wards including our own Ward 2 for a total of 4,178 votes compared to Altmann at 3,113, Sherban 3,064 and Vlachos 129.

Phil Bannon won all the polls in the lake area with only one exception and won in the Ballantrae area for a total of 1,303 votes to Maurice Smith’s 990.

These election results are very good for the Musselman’s Lake area as both these gentlemen are committed to the Community Park and the CUPPEL Project. The MLRA executive already has good lines of communication established with both Mayor Wayne Emmerson and Councillor Phil Bannon. The voters of Musselman’s Lake have helped both the MLRA executive and the community of Musselman’s Lake immensely by supporting the politicians who have supported us.

Thank-you to all those residents, who participated in this very important election.

MLRA Executive Endorses Phil Bannon & Wayne Emmerson

by

“We realize the necessity of being politically active in order to create and sustain a healthy community.”

By Charlene JonesFour years ago Phil Bannon encouraged the residents to form an association to work with him at improving and protecting the quality of life in our community. With Phil’s help and with the cooperation of other politicians we have significantly improved the previously neglected “jewel of Whitchurch-Stouffville”, Musselman’s Lake. The executive of the MLRA have come to realize it’s just not enough to be active environmentally. Through our efforts and the successes we have had we realize the necessity of being politically active in order to create and sustain a healthy community.

Together with Phil Bannon we have made infra structure changes which include new gateways to the community built, roads paved, speed limits adjusted and streetlights tested on 3 streets. Together with Phil Bannon we have made environmental changes. Most significantly the Stewardship Plan to protect and foster the health of the water of Musselman’s Lake is in full swing. Phil Bannon led the way toward closing an illegal dump on Highway #48. He participated with us in the Great Crappie Clean-up when the fish smell ranked and the dead bodies floated.

Now with the CUPPEL project, aimed at improving water quality through shoreline restoration, we have government participation at all three levels.

Perhaps nothing speaks of the determination, commitment and dedication to our community however, as Phil Bannon’s public statement in his first term as Councillor that Mussselman’s Lake Community needs and deserves to have a park.

Finally, through hard work and with his skill at Council we have a 142 Acre Community Park, including 5 Acres of organized community parkland and over 135 Acres of nature preserve with bicycle and hiking trails!

All of these direct actions happened with the help and insight of Phil Bannon.

But that’s not all. To build a community means to participate in events, and celebrations throughout the year. With Phil Bannon as founder and Chair we have participated in very successful social events: the Annual Winter Fest, the new Fall Festival which drew huge numbers of us out for an afternoon of family fun, the Wine and Cheese evenings, an enormous garage sale…all of these interesting and fun afternoons and evenings brought so many of us together. And in so doing raised over $100,000 dollars for our local charities: Boy Scouts, Evergreen Hospice, Lions Rotary Club to name a few.

Although we can look back with well deserved pride on our accomplishments, much still remains to be done. To monitor and improve clean water in Musselman’s Lake, to utilize the park land for educational, recreational and community purposes, to cooperate with governments toward helping them find what we need and want, we need in Council a person with a PROVEN TRACK RECORD. We need someone we know we can trust. We need Phil Bannon.

For these reasons the Executive of the Residents Association of Musselman’s Lake strongly endorses the re-election of Phil Bannon. We know Phil Bannon deserves this endorsement and your vote. We know he works hard, with sustained effort on our behalf. We know his dedication paid off, after five years of keeping the Community Park idea in front of the Mayor and Council, because we have acquired for our community the park he long believed we needed and deserved. That’s dedication! We know he will work with us to help us achieve our goals!

We also endorse Mayor Wayne Emmerson. Mr. Emmerson has been a great proponent of a Community Park at Musselman’s Lake. When seed money was needed to launch The CUPPEL Project, Mayor Emmerson with Phil Bannon, stepped up for the residents of Musselman’s Lake and provided the commitment needed to start the project.

Please don’t misunderstand. We are not saying there are not other good candidates out there. We are simply stating that in the interest of keeping our current projects moving forward these are the politicians with a proven track record of doing what is right for our community. We are saying that it’s in our vested interest to support those politicians who have and will continue to support constant improvement in the Musselman’s Lake area.

On October 25th the Executive of the Musselman’s Lake Residents’ Association encourage every citizen to get out and exercise their right as citizens to choose the candidates they feel best represent their interests and the interests of the community as a whole.

Councillor Phil Bannon Does It Again

by

First Annual Ballantrae Fall Fair Was A Big Success!

Councillor Bannon, Mayor Emmerson and friends have fun time at the Fall Fair
Councillor Bannon, Mayor Emmerson and friends have fun time at the Fall Fair.

Councillor Phil Bannon has what you may call a “knack” for pulling people together as a team. Phil Bannon hosts several very successful annual events that serve not only as a means of fundraising, but also as a way of bringing communities together. He now has another one to his credit. The Ballantrae Fall Fair was a Big Success. Thank you Councillor Phil Bannon for what I am sure is going to be a very popular annual event. No doubt it will get bigger and better every year.

Cedar Beach Fireworks a BIG Success

Weather delay did not stop Cedar Beach from proceeding with Annual Community Fireworks

Once again Cedar Beach gave the residents of Musselman’s Lake an amazing show. The event had been delayed from the planned Saturday night date to a beautiful and calm Sunday night. As the show got more and more intense not only could you hear the fireworks echoing around the Lake but the cheers of many people watching were also reverberating around the brilliantly coloured kettle lake.

Thank you Cedar Beach. We are looking forward to next year.

New Tennis Courts in Ballantrae

by

Resurfacing and Installation of 4 New Tennis Courts in Ballantrae Park Approved by Council

By Councillor Phil Bannon

I am very pleased to announce that on Tuesday August 17th, 2010, Town Council approved unanimously my motion for the resurfacing and installation of 4 new Tennis Courts in the Ballantrae Community Park.

This is exciting news for our community as I focus on providing the residents of Stouffville and in particular Ward #2, with the most current Leisure Services Programs, Services and Facilities.

Congratulations to the Ballantrae Tennis Club as members will now qualify to compete in Regional Tennis competitions.

Tennis instruction for residents of all ages (seniors to youth) will now be available through our Leisure Services Department.

Initial design and layout of the tennis courts has been completed by Leisure Services staff.

Staff will now meet with the recommended contractor to finalize the project design and specifications.

Work on the Tennis courts is scheduled to be completed by mid September.

We have now completed step one, of my long term plan to provide all year (four seasons) Leisure Services Programs for the residents of Ward #2.
